California Council on Economic Education Appoints Financial Industry Veteran to Director of Development

LOS ANGELES — The California Council on Economic Education (CCEE), a leading economic and financial literacy education organization in California, announced today the  appointment of Laurie King to the newly created position of Director of Development and Strategic Planning. She most recently served as a senior writer at Capital Guardian Trust Company and was responsible for providing investment commentary to the firm’s institutional clients.

“Laurie brings tremendous talent and communications skills that will help us grow our organization to connect more of California’s K-12 students to the principles of economics and financial literacy,” said William Coffin, Chairman of the CCEE. “Too many of our young people are losing the battle of financial literacy even before they enter the work force. If we are to have the progressive land of opportunity that California has represented to millions of Americans, then improved economic reasoning and financial literacy must be part of the solution.”

Laurie King is an accomplished financial economist and marketing strategist. Prior to joining Capital Guardian, Ms. King was an economist and fixed-income portfolio strategist at money-management firm, Payden & Rygel. She earned her MBA at the UCLA Anderson School of management and a BS with Honors in Economics from the University of Iowa. Ms. King served on the board of directors for the National Association for Business Economics and was the President of the Los Angeles Chapter, National Association for Business Economics.

“The need for understanding our complex global economy and being able to effectively participate in it has become that much more important for the students and teachers of California and for the businesses and financial institutions  depending on them,” noted Laurie King. “I look forward to working with our talented staff, our partner teachers throughout California and our base of generous corporate and individual sponsors in order to expand the California Council’s reach – to impact one million students each year.”
