Franklin Templeton Investments Awards California Council on Economic Education $10,000 Grant

Los Angeles, CA – Sep. 30, 2009 – The California Council on Economic Education (CCEE), a non-profit dedicated to advancing economic literacy throughout California, and the East Bay Center for Economic Education, today announced they have received a $10,000 grant from Franklin Templeton Investments. The grant will be used to fund operations and to help launch the MoneyWiseTeen program in the Bay Area, which helps high school students develop reasoning skills necessary for economic and financial self-reliance.

“We are excited to be lending support to CCEE and the East Bay Center for Economic Education to bring the MoneyWiseTeen program to the San Francisco Bay Area,” said Amanda McAuley of Franklin Templeton Investments. “Introducing these economic concepts at an early age is important to the state and nation’s economic wellbeing, and we commend these organizations for their efforts to drive education and awareness.”

Franklin Templeton Investments, as part of its charitable donor program, selected CCEE to receive the grant because of its commitment to economic and financial education for young people in order to help teachers prepare them for the economy they will enter.

“Pre- and post-test results demonstrate significant improvement in both knowledge and attitude for students who have experienced the MoneyWiseTeen program.” said CCEE Executive Director Jim Charkins. “The generous grant provided by the Franklin Templeton Foundation and additional efforts by the East Bay Center for Economic Education will make the MoneyWiseTeen program a reality in the Bay Area. We look forward to helping teachers prepare their students for brighter financial futures.”

MoneyWiseTeen is one of 10 programs CCEE conducts each year with the ultimate goal of preparing California students for successful participation in the economy. The web-based program teaches economic concepts that help teenagers develop knowledge and reasoning skills necessary for economic and financial success. Ten web-based animated modules illustrate economic principles through stories that are understandable and relevant to teenagers, and include interactive activities and questions that allow students to learn by doing.

The East Bay Center for Economic Education, located at Cal State University East Bay, is a non-profit similar to CCEE, that provides and promotes quality economic education programs and materials to K-12 students in California. The Center is affiliated with the National Council on Economic Education and the California Council on Economic Education and is part of a national network of economists and educators dedicated to increasing economic understanding in the local, national, and international communities.
