Charles Schwab Foundation Awards California Council on Economic Education $10,000 Grant for Teacher Workshop

Los Angeles, CA – Nov. 18, 2009 – The California Council on Economic Education (CCEE), a non-profit dedicated to advancing economic literacy throughout California, today announced it has received a grant from the Charles Schwab Foundation. The grant will help fund the Teacher Guide to the California Economics Standards workshop in San Francisco, which is designed to better prepare teachers for instructing students on basic economics principles and concepts.

“Providing teachers with the right tools to teach economics and basic finance concepts to young students is the first step in strengthening financial literacy statewide,” said CCEE Executive Director Jim Charkins. “The Charles Schwab Foundation grant will enable Bay Area teachers to receive training they can apply directly in the classroom that will ultimately help students see how useful and relevant economics is to their daily lives.”

Charles Schwab Foundation provides direct grants to selected nonprofit organizations that support Schwab’s commitment to financial literacy and respond to local cultural and social needs.

“In awarding the grant, the foundation recognized CCEE’s dedication to financial literary and continuous efforts to advocate early education and provide support to teachers statewide,” said Carrie Schwab Pomerantz of the Charles Schwab Foundation. “We are pleased to support the teacher workshop in San Francisco and CCEE’s efforts throughout the state.”

The Teacher Guide to the California Economics Standards workshop is intended to help teachers better understand economics principles, break down concepts, and provide new ideas for teaching the mandated high school economics course. Based on the handbook developed by CCEE designed to help teachers meet the 1998 Standards, workshop content focuses on economic principles, including choice, costs of choices, benefit/cost analysis and the role of profit and competition in a market economy.
