Financial Smarts Seminars Educate 150 Teachers Across State on Managing Personal Finances

Los Angeles, CA – Dec. 15, 2009 – The California Council on Economic Education California (CCEE) recently announced that it has concluded its Financial Smarts Seminar series, which is designed to help teachers learn how to manage their personal finances. This year, the workshops helped more than 150 teachers get acquainted with financial topics including taxes, home buying, investment, retirement, budgeting, and wise use of credit.

The Financial Smarts for Teachers program is the only CCEE program designed specifically for teachers. In partnership with the California Jump$tart Coalition and the California Society of Certified Public Accountants (CalCPA), this program provides useful financial information for teachers that will not only help them manage their own personal finances but provide ideas on how to teach lessons on finance as well

CCEE held six Financial Smarts seminars across California in 2009. The seminars were made possible by a grant CCEE received from the California Jump$tart Coalition and from sponsors Citi Foundation and the Richard Myles Johnson Foundation.

“These workshops have been tremendously successful in assisting teachers in managing about all aspects of their personal financial portfolio,” said CCEE Executive Director Jim Charkins. “We have been able to effectively educate new and pre-service teachers on making sound financial decisions, as well as acquaint them with materials they can use with their students.”

Participants were surveyed after the workshop with 95 percent indicating they found value in the information presented. The majority noted they had learned new techniques that would help them develop a plan to reduce debt, manage their credit and revaluate their household spending.
